The latest installment in the photobook trilogy published by Modernbook Editions, Fan Ho’s “A Hong Kong Memoir,” follows “The Living Theatre” and “Hong Kong Yesterday.” This third and final volume includes a detailed introduction by Mark Pinsukanjana and Bryan Yedinak, as well as an afterword by Sarah van Ingelgom. Here, Fan Ho experiments with old negatives, creating new and intriguing narratives of the cityscape by layering them one on top of the other. These carefully curated compositions, created using double-negative prints, form worlds that are both playful and maintain their elegant and timeless depiction of the artist’s beloved city. Fan Ho brilliantly crafts new narratives and scenes using this layering technique to make “something old new again.” The viewer creates and explores new worlds, allowing people to rediscover Hong Kong once more through the multiplicity of meanings and references visible in Fan Ho’s latest work.
