A Night of Nostalgia is a collection of works by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. It is one of Araki's masterpieces from the 1980s, and is the product of Araki's love affair with his wife Yoko in his later years, and the collaboration between Araki and Akira Suei. This book was published by Byakuya Shobo, the publisher of the magazine "Shashin Jidai," when the magazine was becoming a monthly issue instead of a bimonthly one, and was designed by Suei. It is about the activities that took place in the couple's home on the night they watched Tarkovsky's film "Nostalgia" in Roppongi, and also includes a text by Yoko Araki, "A Novel" (Yoko also had a serial in Shashin Jidai at the time). One might think that this is a one-sided imposition of Araki's sexuality and the act of photography, but according to Yoko's text, she doesn't necessarily dislike this imposition, but rather likes it, and she also writes about her interest in being photographed. Not only does it depict the couple's somewhat ordinary, intense daily life, but Yoko's text is also meaningful, and the stylish book design by Suei is also wonderful, making this a masterpiece.
