Kikuji Kawada’s The Globe Theater, published in 1998 as a self published edition, is one of the most ambitious and enigmatic photobooks of his career. Bringing together images made over almost three decades, the book is structured as a three part visual universe: Los Caprichos (1969–1981), The Last Cosmology (1979–1997), and Car Maniac (1991–1998).  
Rather than presenting a straightforward retrospective, Kawada constructs a fragmented theatre of modern existence. Black and white photographs collide with colour images, dense urban scenes, distorted details, mysterious landscapes and photomontage. Nothing feels entirely stable. The familiar world is repeatedly transformed into something strange, theatrical and almost hallucinatory.
The title is crucial. The globe becomes both the world itself and a stage upon which fragments of human experience appear and disappear. Kawada does not simply photograph reality; he dismantles it and reconstructs it through association, juxtaposition and visual tension. A street, a car, a face, a building or a piece of sky can suddenly become part of a much larger and more unsettling cosmology.
The book also reveals Kawada’s extraordinary understanding of the photobook as a medium. Designed by Mitsuo Katsui, its sequence is as important as the individual photographs. The images accumulate gradually, creating a rhythm in which meaning is never fixed. One photograph changes the atmosphere of the next, while apparently unrelated images begin to establish unexpected connections.  
The result is a dark, complex and deeply personal vision of the modern world. The Globe Theater feels less like a conventional collection of photographs than an autonomous visual work, where memory, imagination, urban experience and abstraction coexist.
Published in an edition of only 550 numbered copies, The Globe Theater stands as a remarkable late twentieth century Japanese photobook and a key work within Kawada’s extraordinary body of work.
