At thirty-eight, while living in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Rosalind Fox Solomon began a new life as a photographer. Studying with Lisette Model in the early 1970s, she refined the voice that would define the next half-century's prolific work. After moving to a New York loft in 1984 and travelling through Peru, India, South Africa, Cambodia and beyond, she became known for unflinching photographs of everyday life worldwide.
Throughout this period, she also made self-portraits. Using photography for persistent introspection, she studied her ageing body over five decades and embraced the distance the camera provided. A Woman I Once Knew combines these portraits with extended texts to form an ambitious autobiographical work. Her writing evokes the recurring depressions and euphoric encounters with other cultures that shaped her life and empathetic approach to photography. The texts enter a tense, suggestive dialogue with the revealing self-portraits. This remarkable work demonstrates rigorous, sensitive self-examination and the seemingly limitless possibilities of taking oneself as a subject.
