RRB Photobooks presents Martin Parr's A Year in the Life of Chew Stoke Village. The book comprises images from Martin's time in Chew Stoke in 1992 and includes text by Robert Chesshyre from an article originally commissioned for Telegraph Magazine. Through the book, readers discover Chew Stoke's delicate social structure and the people who make the village what it is.
This collaboration between RRB and Martin Parr is richly printed and includes more than 40 previously unpublished images from the 1992 project. A new text by Diane Smyth places the work in the context of 2022, both as documentary work and as part of Parr's long and varied career.
Presented in a luxurious clothbound hardcover, the publication also included 50 special-edition copies. That special edition included two signed, limited 10x10" archival pigment prints of 'Chew Stoke Bowls Club' and 'Cricket Players looking for cricket ball' (Image 2). The images were presented in a custom presentation folder enclosed in a printed box. The publisher's original announcement stated that all special-edition and preorder copies would be signed.
A Year in the Life of Chew Stoke Village is the culmination of a year-long project in which Martin Parr immersed himself in the happenings of a rural Somerset village outside Bristol. At a time when house prices had plummeted nationwide and young people struggled to afford to remain in the village, an influx of newcomers had caused mild tensions throughout the community. Yet during colourful summer fêtes, evenings drinking at the local pub and the many celebrations in between, Parr was able to build relationships with residents, gain access to village events throughout the year and get to know its inhabitants.
Martin Parr is one of the leading documentary photographers of our time. Often described as a "chronicler of life", he is renowned for capturing his distinctive view of society in a way that allows us to see seemingly familiar things anew. His work in Chew Stoke does precisely that: at first glance it may seem the quintessence of English village life, but Parr's images bring a sense of "humanity" to those photographed, making it easier to understand and connect with Chew Stoke's area and community.
