Krass Clement's Across the Cut grew out of a short visit to Bristol in June 2016. Invited to speak at Photobook Bristol and discuss a possible future publishing project, he had not planned this book, but it emerged during his stay. Unlike many earlier works, he began editing and sequencing immediately on returning to Denmark. His visit coincided with the lead-up to the UK's referendum on EU membership. The prospect of Britain leaving deeply troubled him and undoubtedly affected his mood and perceptions while photographing.
Ambiguities of being left behind, loneliness, limbo and powerlessness recur throughout Clement's books, independent of place, but few express them as strongly as these images around Bristol's Cut.
The Cut is an artificial channel built in the early nineteenth century to help create a floating harbour. About three kilometres long, it divides the city, with the traditionally more prosperous area to the north. Most photographs were made on the southern side.
