From March 1981 to June 1983, David Hockney spent virtually all his creative time experimenting voraciously with the camera. He took thousands of photographs and ultimately produced more than 350 photocollages, ranging from intimate “sketches” to dizzying panoramas containing myriad details and hundreds of micro-perspectives. His aim, as he put it, was to create “pictures that describe how we see, not all at once, but in separate, discrete glimpses… to synthesise a living impression”. For Hockney, the experience was profound. “I don't think I have ever thought so much about vision, about how we see, as I have over the past few months.”
In Cameraworks, we see the fruits of Hockney's work, accompanied by a substantial introductory essay based on extensive interviews with him by New York art critic Lawrence Weschler.
