The young woman casually crossing my path is a work of art. So is the middle-aged man sitting on the pavement opposite her. So is the middle-aged woman eagerly shopping in a crowded store. So is the cat stretching and yawning on that wall.
The young man in Kabukicho, couples walking through the love-hotel district and drinkers in Golden Gai are all, essentially, works of art.
Tokyo is full of art, and all its people are works of art. What about me, walking with my digital camera, photographing this, that and the other? Am I a work of art too? — Daido Moriyama, March 7, 2012.
Published in 2012, Color contains 191 images documenting Tokyo between 2008 and 2012, selected from 30,000 digital photographs. Across 312 pages, street scenes, fleeting portraits and snapshots of lived experiences enter the new visual context of colour. The resulting experience is exciting and stimulating while retaining the provocative character associated with Moriyama's black-and-white work. Published by Getsuyosha, it appeared alongside its companion, Monochrome.
