Throughout 2020, we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Joan Fontcuberta's archive, focusing in particular on the earliest years of his career as a photographer.
Our exploration was undoubtedly influenced, in part, by the concept of countervision, an idea that we find deeply compelling and one that has been central to Fontcuberta's artistic practice. Countervision refers to those elements that challenge the very language of photography, questioning its conventions and disrupting its internal logic.
In selecting and editing the images, many of them previously unpublished, we sought photographs that evoke the unreal, the magical, and the dreamlike. Our interest extended beyond what is visibly depicted to what each image conceals, suggests, or transcends. Ultimately, we were drawn to photographs that invite the imagination and subtly unsettle what we conventionally understand as reality.
