Álvaro Villarrubia is a Spanish photographer, born in 1964. The son of an amateur photographer and an advertising professional, he studied advertising but soon set those studies aside to concentrate on photography. He began photographing 1980s pop stars for record covers and concert posters. Since then, he has produced celebrity portraits and fashion features for countless Spanish publications, including El Mundo (Revista), El País, Neo2, Vanidad, Tendencias, Man, H Magazine, Arte de Vivir, Avenue, Rolling Stone, MTV Magazine and Fake. His international clients include Art in America, SHÖN! (UK), Paris Match, French Vogue, French Photo, Corriere della Sera, Marie Claire and Elle (Italy), Vision (China), Manner Aktuell (Germany), Blanco y negro (Australia), Doux Magazine (Argentina), Umbigo (Portugal) and Dress Code (Russia). He has also worked on film posters, including Alejandro Amenábar's Tesis, and the 2007 fashion campaign for Italian brand A-Style featuring football superstar Leo Messi, as well as projects for Levi's, Swatch, Athos Lombardini, Camper and Madrigal. His photographs have been exhibited at ARCO, FotoEspaña, Canal de Isabel II, Estampa, Injuve and Comunidad de Madrid, Casa de Oslo (Norway), A. B. Project (Berlin), London's ALTERNATIVE ART FORUM (group exhibition), Fotogalería 20 (Bilbao), and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León. His work is collected in this monograph, CRASH! (T.F. Editores).
