Photo Vision, Junta de Andalucía, 1989. Spanish two-volume edition. This copy retains the explanatory booklet in Spanish and English that accompanied the exhibition, together with the photobook. Both are in very good condition. The book's upper right corner is slightly lifted, as shown in the item photograph. Finding both volumes together in this condition is now almost impossible.
The photobook consists largely of illustrations—photographs, drawings and documents—of elaborately constructed imaginary animals: a snake with six pairs of legs, a winged elephant, a rabbit with fangs and other wonders. 111 pages. Tan paper covers with a dark brown title and a plain cardboard slipcase. 22.4 × 16.8 cm.
This elaborate artistic hoax was based on the premise that Joan Fontcuberta and photographer Pere Formiguera had discovered the archive of Dr Peter Ameisenhaufen (1895–1955), a researcher of obscure, previously unknown creatures. The resulting exhibition travelled to several European countries, Japan, Canada and the United States. A review of the MoMA exhibition described "photographs... both in their natural habitats and in laboratory situations; detailed field notes in the original German and in English translation; an occasional skeletal X-ray or dissection drawing; two or three recordings of the animals' cries and, in one case, an actual stuffed specimen".
