In 1978, Mary Ellen Mark convinced Geo Magazine, the publication she worked for, to document the busy Falkland Road. Falkland Road is a famous street for prostitutes in Bombay. It's like any busy street in the densely populated Bombay. The street is lined with old wooden buildings, which are filled with prostitutes displaying themselves in the windows or on the ground-floor shopfronts. From dawn to dusk, clients pass by the street to inspect the girls. This first edition of Mary Ellen Mark's extraordinary portrait of Falkland Road was first published in 1981 and has long been recognized as one of the Magnum photographer's major works. The book contains 65 photographs taken over six weeks that depict the everyday life of the women (and men) on the street. Mark's images are captivating, electric, striking, and remarkable for their emotional power and visceral brilliance of color. Together with Mark's captions and introductory text, Falkland Road is a stunning insight into a raw and terrifying world, made accessible by the photographer's total involvement, her humanity, and the way she captures life.
