In Vivo brings together Klavdij Sluban's photographic work at the Fleury-Mérogis young offenders' institution in France from 1995 to 2016 [Beds] and his 2008 work at Izalco prison in El Salvador [Visiting Rooms], connected through Gareth Davis's music.
Sluban, winner of the 2009 European Publishers Award for Photography, the Leica Award (2004) and France's leading photography award, the Prix Niépce (2000), is a French photographer of Slovenian origin, born in Paris in 1963.
He develops a rigorous, coherent body of work nourished by literature and never driven by immediate, sensationalist news, making him one of his generation's most interesting photographers. The Balkans, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean, Central America, Russia, China and Antarctica, including the first artistic mission to the Kerguelen Islands, can be read as successive stages in a patient, close exploration of encountered reality.
