Hundreds of unaccompanied minors live in the city of Melilla. Poor conditions and systemic violence in reception centres lead many of these young people to run away and survive on the streets, alone and unprotected. For them, Melilla is the port, the stepping stone towards their ultimate destination: mainland Europe. To reach the Spanish mainland, they must cross the Mediterranean—hidden beneath lorries or inside freight containers—the world's deadliest border.
