Our favourite Japanese photobook, Okinawa Okinawa by Shomei Tomatsu is an outstanding work, halfway between a protest photobook and a documentary. It records the American occupation of Okinawa and the microcosm surrounding the presence of the US fleet, from brothels to graphic messages urging the Marines to leave the island. The cover features one of Japanese photography's most iconic images: a missile launching amid bamboo canes towards an unknown target. The influence of the Provoke collective is palpable in Tomatsu's photographs, yet they retain the Japanese photographer's distinctive, unmistakable vision.
The book is in very good condition considering that it dates from 1969. There is only a half-drop-shaped mark approximately 3 cm long on the back cover; please see the photograph to assess the damage more closely. The book still retains the three original cards advertising other works by Shomei Tomatsu. At Dartbooks we have added a non-adhesive Mylar protective cover.
