Nerhol is an artist duo formed in 2007 by Yoshihisa Tanaka, whose graphic design uses paper and two-dimensional composition, and Ryuta Iida, whose sculptures employ paper and text. They attracted considerable attention with their 2012 portraits, made by photographing people over several minutes, stacking 200 prints and carving into them. Moving fluidly between photography and sculpture, Nerhol pursues multifaceted explorations of human society, nature, time and space from a contemporary perspective.
Recent solo exhibitions include Tenjin, Mume, Nusa at Dazaifu Tenmangu Museum, Fukuoka (2024); Beyond the Way at Museo Leonora Carrington, Mexico (2024); Reverberation at The Mass, Tokyo (2023); Affect at Dai-ichi Life Gallery and Gallery M5, Tokyo (2023); and critical plane at Yutaka Kikutake Gallery, Tokyo (2021).
