In this collection, Lee Friedlander examines the ordinary pickup truck, a quintessentially American means of transport. In both form and function, pickups have long been the vehicle of choice for farmers and tradespeople. Their battered beds, usually open to the elements and to public view, have held and carried everything from spare tyres and cables to animals and the occasional person. With his witty, perceptive visual language, Friedlander has observed this profoundly utilitarian yet personal object in its natural habitat: the cacophonous bricolage of the American social landscape.
