What Winogrand has given us in these photographs is a one-sided account of how we behaved under pressure during an era of costumes and causes, and of how extravagantly, outrageously and continually we displayed what we wanted. — Tod Papageorge
Public Relations brings together a photographic project begun by Garry Winogrand in 1969, when he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph what he called “the effect of the media on events”. With his characteristic enthusiasm, passion, spontaneity and intensity, Winogrand photographed a variety of public events, including museum openings, press conferences, sporting events, demonstrations, awards ceremonies, a birthday party and a moon launch. The photographs reveal our growing dependence on the media, as well as the ways in which the media change—and sometimes even create—the events themselves.
