Tod Papageorge's Studio 54 takes us inside New York's most famous nightclub. In the late 1970s, it was the place to be seen, attracting thousands, regularly including models, actors, rock stars, artists, designers and politicians. Papageorge's exquisite photographs contain all the decadence and glamour associated with 1970s New York.
While photographers were commonplace, most simply sought out the rich and famous. Papageorge's images transcend the obvious, transforming glitter into something approaching poetry.
This new limited gold edition celebrates ten years since Studio 54 was first published by STANLEY/BARKER in 2014.
"The 66 photographs in this book were taken between 1978 and 1980 at Studio 54, a New York discotheque that, during those years, was the place to be and be seen, as the celebrities, partygoers and dance enthusiasts filling it nightly happily demonstrated. As its reputation suggested—rapidly becoming notorious during its brief 33-month existence—it was difficult to enter. Impassive doormen distributed access as though guarding a fabulous kingdom. Only the famous or socially connected could assume they would be whisked from the hopeful crowds outside the velvet rope and ushered through the door; otherwise, beauty was the likeliest advantage. Once inside, however, everyone seemed thrilled to be there, whatever had secured their entry. The excitement was fuelled by pulsating music and brilliantly designed interiors that, on a party night, might evoke anything from Caliban's cave to a harem."
