“Two projects I focused on were Little League baseball and summer camps. Every year, from spring into summer, one led to the other, and certain things never changed… At summer camp, there are sleeping bags, cabins and campsites. There is not much difference between 1990 and 1965. I liked being that age. A kind of serious maturity develops around eleven. When a very young child laughs or cries, it has no real resonance, whereas those emotions between eight and twelve are moving. Once they become adults, it is simply not the same. Many of these photographs are about being a child placed in a particular situation. In one picture, children who have been horrible to one another all summer are now parting, and the depth of their love just comes pouring out. It is almost unbearable…”
