Photographer Joseph Szabo's subject is adolescence; his rare gift is capturing the spirit of his students at Malverne High School, caught between puberty and the brink of adulthood. Taken in the 1970s and 1980s, the photographs in Teenage vividly evoke that period, yet there is something timeless and endlessly compelling about Szabo's portrait of near-adulthood. Some teenagers are painfully self-conscious; others are confident beyond their years. All have granted Szabo the unique trust of allowing him to see them as they are. The fine line between intimacy and exploitation that other photographers negotiate is not apparent here: Szabo has no agenda beyond recording these moments of extraordinary beauty, courage and confusion. With an introduction by writer and director Cameron Crowe — himself a skilled chronicler of the excitement and anguish of youth, associated with Fast Times at Ridgemont High and, more recently, Almost Famous — Teenage is a moving record of two decades of Szabo's work and a timeless evocation of near-adulthood.
