Francesca Woodman made her first mature photographs at thirteen, later creating a body of work acclaimed for its singular style and innovative approach. Despite her lifetime achievements, including solo and group exhibitions and the publication of a book, and the widespread celebration of her work after her early death in 1981, little has been published about her remarkable artist's books.
The Artist's Books brings together every page of all eight unique books in one comprehensive volume, including two newly discovered works never previously seen alongside better-known titles such as Some Disordered Interior Geometries. Their foundations were worn nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century journals and notebooks Woodman found in Rome's bookshops and flea markets in the late 1970s. She transformed these volumes by attaching prints, transparencies and handwritten annotations to their evocative pages. They demonstrate a sophisticated relationship with narrative and sequence and reveal the extent of her engagement with the book form.
