In 1959, the 25-year-old Bruce Davidson read an article in a local newspaper about youth gangs in New York City. With the help of a social worker, he contacted a gang calling themselves “the Jokers” and became a daily observer and photographer of this alienated youth culture. This work, his first major project, made when he was not much older than the young people he depicted, became the classic photographic project Brooklyn Gang: a collection of images of tough people and tough lives, capturing a vision of youth in post-war New York City.
