First published in 1982, Stephen Shore's legendary Uncommon Places has influenced more than one generation of photographers. Shore was among the first artists to take colour beyond advertising and fashion photography. His large-format colour work on America's vernacular landscape lies at the root of a photographic tradition that has flourished over the past forty years.
Uncommon Places: The Complete Works presents a definitive collection of the series and has become a contemporary classic within a decade. For this sumptuous reissue, Shore has added twenty images and a statement on rediscovering previously unprinted photographs and expanding a classic series.
Like Robert Frank and Walker Evans before him, Shore found a previously unarticulated vision of America through the road and the camera. Approaching his subjects with cool objectivity, he preserves precise internal systems of gesture, composition and light, through which an empty car park, hotel room or side-street building acquires an archetypal aura and an ambiguous personal significance. Alongside the landscapes most associated with Uncommon Places, this expanded survey reveals equally remarkable interiors and portraits.
An essay by distinguished critic and curator Stephan Schmidt-Wulffen and a conversation with fiction writer Lynne Tillman examine Shore's methodology and its roots in late-1960s and early-1970s Pop and Conceptual art. The texts are illustrated with reproductions from his earlier American Surfaces and Amarillo: Tall in Texas series.
