Eikoh Hosoe (b. 1933, Yamagata) is one of the most influential Japanese photographers in the history of the medium. This comprehensive volume will serve as the definitive resource on Hosoe’s work, edited, designed and produced under the artist’s direction and in collaboration with internationally renowned curator and scholar Yasufumi Nakamori. Since the mid-1950s, Eikoh Hosoe has been at the forefront of photographic practice in Japan: as an image-maker whose work encompasses a wide range of subjects; as a curator who introduced works by major European and American photographers to Japan in 1968; and as a teacher who has influenced the careers of numerous distinguished photographers, including Daido Moriyama. He co-founded an influential lens-based art magazine, the Vivo photographic cooperative and, later, the progressive Photography Workshop.
