Three Rings is a compelling documentary study of dirt-track racing in Western Michigan, photographed by Sam Gulliver throughout the 2023 racing season. Rather than approaching motorsport through the polished spectacle of professional racing, Gulliver focuses on the raw, local culture surrounding three dirt racetracks, where drivers, families, friends and spectators come together every weekend.

The photographs capture an environment driven by noise, speed, dust and adrenaline. Gulliver uses an intense direct flash that gives the images an immediate, almost physical quality. The harsh illumination recalls the flash photography of an earlier era, while its unpredictability mirrors the uncontrolled energy of the races themselves.

What makes Three Rings particularly effective is the photographer’s attention to the community behind the machines. The cars are important, but so are the people who build them, drive them, watch them and return week after week. Children, mechanics, spectators and drivers become part of a shared social landscape in which racing is as much about belonging as it is about competition.

The resulting images are energetic, imperfect and sometimes chaotic. Dust, motion blur, reflections and harsh flashes contribute to a visual language that feels entirely appropriate to the subject. Gulliver does not attempt to impose order on this world; instead, he embraces its intensity and unpredictability.

Three Rings is ultimately a portrait of a distinctly American subculture, where speed, machinery and competition become a way of bringing people together. Gulliver transforms the dirt track into a vivid social stage, creating a Photography Book that feels immediate, physical and deeply rooted in the landscape and communities it portrays.
