8K / Matter Print House Session 2019 is a photobook by Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota, one of the leading figures in contemporary Japanese experimental photography. His career began to gain recognition with the Grand Prize at the Photo 1_WALL exhibition in 2010, an important platform for young photographers. He subsequently received various international awards, including those associated with Unseen Photo Fair (2013), Photo London / John Kobal Residency Award (2015) and the Paul Huf Award (2016), establishing his reputation both in Japan and abroad.
Together with photographers Koji Kitagawa and Naohiro Udagawa, Yokota founded the collective Spew, through which he has developed a wide variety of projects, including zine production and musical performances.
This photobook is a limited edition that was distributed free of charge to visitors at Photobook JP, the photobook fair held at Osanbashi Hall, Yokohama, in 2019.
The project takes Daisuke Yokota's work Matter as its starting point and brings together four renowned Japanese book designers, Katsuya Kato, Kei Machiguchi, Yoshihisa Tanaka and Satoru Machiguchi, and four companies specializing in photobook printing: Yamada Photo Engraving, Fujiwara Printing, San M Color and Live Art Books.
Each team was free to interpret the photographic material, developing its own approach to design, printing and binding. The result is a series of publications exploring the material and graphic possibilities of the photobook as an artistic object.
This copy is the version produced by the team of Kei Machiguchi and San M Color.
Limited edition of 500 copies.
