Published by Fundación MAPFRE in 2026, this volume surveys more than twenty years of work by Alejandro Cartagena, one of the leading photographers on the contemporary Latin American scene. Conceived to accompany his retrospective exhibition, the catalogue brings together a selection of projects that trace the development of a body of work deeply connected to the social, economic and environmental transformations of the territory.  Born in the Dominican Republic in 1977 and based in Monterrey, Mexico, Cartagena has developed a photographic practice that examines the contradictions of urban growth, social inequalities, migration and the complex relationships between Mexico and the United States. His work pays particular attention to the consequences of development models for the landscape and the people who inhabit it.  Through series such as Suburbia Mexicana, Carpoolers, Los Americanos, Suburban Bus and Rivers of Power, Cartagena reflects on housing, work, mobility and the transformation of the territory. His photographs reveal how economic and political decisions leave visible traces in seemingly everyday spaces, from suburban housing developments to roads and landscapes altered by human activity.  One of the most interesting features of his visual language is his use of repetition, sequence and the accumulation of images. Moving beyond traditional documentary photography, Cartagena develops visual investigations in which each image forms part of a broader narrative structure. Editing and organising photographic material thus become fundamentally important, something particularly evident in his many publishing projects.  His well-known series Carpoolers, in which he photographs workers travelling in the backs of pickup trucks from an elevated viewpoint, is a particularly significant example of this approach. Repeating the same framing transforms individual scenes into a collective portrait of working conditions and daily journeys in Monterrey.  Beyond its retrospective dimension, this publication reveals the coherence of a body of work that combines social research, formal experimentation and a critical view of the contemporary landscape. A catalogue of particular interest to photobook collectors and readers interested in Latin American documentary photography and the narrative possibilities of the photobook.
