Fashion in the 2000s

Through a collection of Hedi Slimane's photographs from the 2000s, this book traces the iconic designer's journey in fashion before, during and after his time at Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior. Critics credit Slimane with infusing menswear during this decade with an androgynous, rock-inspired energy that influenced high fashion worldwide.

In a 2003 conversation with Ingrid Sischy for Interview, Slimane discussed his beginnings as a photographer: “I started taking photographs even before I started in fashion. I didn't begin with clothes until I was sixteen, but I had my first camera when I was eleven. I have always taken photographs, almost as some people take notes or write down their thoughts.”

This is the first of the four volumes, DE/RU (Germany–Russia), specifically Moscow–Berlin. It reveals that Slimane's duotone photographs, combining the music scene, street fashion and his runway shows, are as fresh as his paradigm-shifting fashion work. They reveal his inspirations and attention to both youth culture and classical references, suggesting that his contribution to high fashion lay in the constant refinement of a line and silhouette that would shape the culture of the 2000s.
