Journey to China is a photobook by Ihei Kimura, a pioneer of Japanese photography active since before the war. His work ranged from photojournalism at Nippon Kobo with Yonosuke Natori and others to portraits of women such as Hideko Takamine and street photographs compared with those of Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau. This collection was published two months after his death.
Its photographs characteristically capture the expressions of people in China and the humanity they reveal. In his accompanying commentary, Kishin Shinoyama describes Kimura's almost miraculous ability to take just one or two frames, naturally finding the right position. Blending into the crowd, Kimura observes and records from the perspective of ordinary people, maintaining a consistent gaze throughout. Shinoyama praises the perceptive, gentle yet sharp eye that gave rise to this work.
