The photobook Matsue was originally published in 1978 by Sanin Broadcasting Systems, a broadcaster based in Tottori and Shimane prefectures.
 
It contains 130 carefully selected images Ueda made around 1960 in Matsue, near his home in Tottori Prefecture. Moving between documentary, landscape, snapshot and staged photography, they take us through a year in the city's life, marked by seasonal events and changes in the weather. The large pages allow Ueda's photographic mastery to unfold before the reader: his gentle vision of the world, brilliant compositions and subtle humour.
 
The book includes extended essays by writer Taneichiro Kanto and a foreword by writer Torahiko Tamiya. All texts are in Japanese.
