Publisher's description: Gerry Johansson began working as an independent photographer in the mid-1980s. His quiet, substantial photographs of cities and rural areas in Europe and the United States have established him as a significant European photographer.
Ehime is a series of photographs of Japan's Ehime Prefecture. Johansson had visited Tokyo in the 1970s and 1980s and was deeply interested in both Japan and its capital. Invited for a residency in 1999, he was surprised by Ehime's contrast with Tokyo and drawn to its mixture of nature and modern life. During his month-long stay, he drove throughout the prefecture, photographing with a large-format camera.
Some of his Ehime photographs had appeared in other publications, but this was the first book devoted entirely to them. For this collection, he returned to the negatives and repeatedly refined the edit, creating a book that invites readers to return again and again.
