Lydia Goldblatt's Fugue is a work about love and grief, motherhood and the loss of a mother, intimacy and distance, told through photographs and writing. Centred on the domestic sphere and made over four years, it tells a story that is neither apologetic nor idealised.
When Goldblatt became a mother, she found herself unable to make photographs. After her own mother's death, however, she began photographing again, both at home and in the city around her.
“I wanted to be honest about what I was struggling with, about feelings of claustrophobia and rage as much as intimacy and love. These are feelings mothers often hide, and that are frequently silenced as unacceptable.”
An exhibition of photographs from Fugue will be shown at Robert Morat Gallery this autumn.
