This compact edition of Gypsies makes master photographer Josef Koudelka's seminal work accessible once again. The volume includes all 109 photographs from Koudelka's recent remastering of the series Cikáni, Czech for “Gypsies”: photographs of Roma society taken between 1962 and 1971 in what was then Czechoslovakia, as well as Romania, Hungary, France and Spain. Roma scholar and sociologist Will Guy, who contributed to the 1975 and 2011 editions, updates his analysis of the Roma's situation, including more recent unrest in France and Europe. Photography historian Stuart Alexander, newly appointed editor-in-chief of Delpire Éditeur, contributes a brief history of this body of work's evolution in book form.
