This long-awaited publication presents 73 of Steinmetz's photographs of young baseball players, on the field and in the dugout, absorbed in the game or lost in their own worlds. Made between 1986 and 1990, the photographs are classic Steinmetz: tenderness, humour and humanism are all present, alongside his exquisite use of natural light and attention to poetic detail.
"The children in Steinmetz's photographs are between six and thirteen, with a few older boys. Steinmetz must remember how awkward and uncoordinated bodies can be at that age. His empathy is evident throughout the series. Most of these children are too young to possess the required grace, skill or concentration, and too inexperienced to know the sheer pleasure of being good—perhaps really good—at an unforgiving sport. These children run into one another chasing a fly ball. Steinmetz concentrates less on the players on the field than on those outside the baselines, waiting to play or cooling off. He observes coaches and spectators who love the game or one of the players, or who simply have an afternoon to spare. He sees moments of 'high five' and 'what were you thinking?' His photographs have all the skill and grace the players lack." —Introduction by Anne Tucker
