In New York Sleeps, Christopher Thomas travelled through New York City's empty streets, photographing dreamlike urban landscapes with a large-format Polaroid camera. For this new book, he turns his lens on Los Angeles, capturing duotone images of its iconic buildings and spaces: the Chinese Theatre without tourists, Griffith Observatory peacefully alone, Hollywood Boulevard without celebrities or onlookers. Around the city's Art Deco buildings and mid-century drive-ins, pavements and car parks stand empty. Taken early in the morning, with sunlight barely filtering between buildings, or at dusk in dim, muted light, these images form a tender love letter to Los Angeles. Admirers of New York Sleeps will be delighted by another sublime project from Thomas, while residents and lovers of Los Angeles will marvel at this fresh interpretation of the City of Angels.
