Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen's images are bold and surprising. This monograph explores parasomnia, a sleep disorder associated with strange feelings and dreams. Through photographs made in West and East Africa, she blurs the boundaries between art, fashion and photography. The series is both enchanting and exciting, challenging viewers to invent their own stories around the images.
Sassen's art moves between opposing poles. She stages her subjects in documentary settings, works with sharp contrasts of light and shadow clashing with brilliant colours, and presents a reality that seems to unfold on a film set. Her practice lies at the intersection of fashion, documentary and art photography. The years she spent in Kenya as a child left clear traces in her work: Africa is the subject of her most important and successful photographic projects.
