Japanese photographer Koji Otsuka was living in New York when the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001. As the city changed in response, so did he. Snap Out of It records his New York years from 2001 to 2008.
 
 
 
“In earlier times, people watched a volcano erupt believing the mountain god was angry. Perhaps at that moment, many of us, myself included, who had lost the ability to speak and could only stare, felt humbled at the sight of such a god suddenly appearing before us in violent anger. Surely humanity's sheer greed must have angered the god. The event was so overwhelming and sudden that this was the only way to process it.
 
 
 
I have not personally seen that god again. But whenever I hear news of a tragic accident caused by human actions, I cannot help thinking that the god has returned to rebuke us for continuing to live so arrogantly on this planet.”
