To celebrate Michael Kenna's fiftieth year as a photographer, we are delighted to announce Michael Kenna: Photographs and Stories. Beautifully printed on Japanese Kasadaka paper and bound in custom deep-blue cloth, this new monograph is limited to 2,000 hardcover copies. Published in association with the Center for Photographic Art, it coincides with a travelling exhibition opening at its historic Carmel, California, gallery in November 2023.
Kenna selected one image for every year beginning in 1973, when he enrolled at Banbury School of Art. Following the Photographs section, Stories provides context for each image and considers its connection with his life at the time.
Arguably his generation's most influential landscape photographer, Kenna often works at dawn or night, concentrating on the interaction between fleeting atmospheric conditions and human-made structures and sculptural masses. More than ninety books and catalogues have featured his work. His exquisite handmade gelatin-silver prints have been exhibited worldwide and are held in permanent collections including the National Gallery, Washington, DC; Shanghai Art Museum; and Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2022, France's Ministry of Culture appointed him an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.
"This book is a journey through foreign and familiar places, winding through black-and-white scenes of spacious calm. Looking at these images is a great pleasure: perhaps everything will be all right, the world is not such a bad place and magic still exists. These photographs offer reassurance, and I am grateful for Michael Kenna's half-century of watching light and recording his vision." —From Ann Jastrab's introduction.
