Bas Princen (born in Zeeland, the Netherlands, in 1975) belongs to a generation of photographers who, in their own ways, reference the so-called New Topographics. This group comprised ten renowned landscape photographers, including Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Stephen Shore and, of course, Bernd and Hilla Becher, who achieved their first major international success in 1975 with an exhibition of the same name at George Eastman House in Rochester. While they distanced themselves from subjectively inflected photography in an attempt to depict stark reality as faithfully as possible, Princen approaches urban space with comparable objectivity, but with an ironic twist. Through his lens, anonymous urban architecture acquires an almost magical, subtly surreal air.
