Scenic Beauty of Japan is a photobook by Yoichi Midorikawa, one of Japan's distinguished photographers. An amateur photographer associated with the Sanyo region, he maintained a lifelong friendship with Shoji Ueda, his celebrated counterpart from Sanin. Born in Okayama Prefecture, Midorikawa pursued the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea while working as a dentist. His remarkable colour photographs made extensive use of multiple exposures and solarisation, earning him the description “magician of colour”. His representative work, Seto Inland Sea (1962), is also featured in Ryuichi Kaneko's survey of Japanese photobooks from 1956 to 1986, which presents landmark works from the history of postwar Japanese photography.
This book was published as the third volume of Sonorama Photo Selection, a 27-volume series devoted to renowned photographers active since the end of the war. It contains striking monochrome landscapes.
