From the late 1920s until his death in 1975, renowned photographer Walker Evans returned obsessively to particular subjects. His fascination with signs produced some of his finest photographs: billboards and film posters, newspaper headlines and theatre marquees. This book brings together fifty such photographs from the Getty Museum's extensive collection of Evans's work. There are images from the time and place most closely associated with him, the rural South of the 1930s, alongside less familiar photographs: street scenes and advertising in New York City, and images made in Chicago, Detroit and Havana.
