American Roulette is a photobook by Japanese writer and photographer Shinya Fujiwara, an unconventional artist who has combined essays and photographs since the 1970s. His notable works include Wandering in India, a young man's travel diary; Travelogue of Wandering, winner of the third Kimura Ihei Award; and All Over Asia, winner of the twenty-third Mainichi Art Award. Set mainly in Asia, these photo essays explore landscapes, cultures, ways of life and existence through extended journeys, attracting readers of all ages. Fujiwara focused primarily on writing in the 1980s; this book marked his return to photography after almost a decade. Over seven months, he documented a journey across America. Embracing its car culture, he rented a large motorhome and photographed vast horizons, desolate landscapes and urban streets, presenting a multifaceted vision of the country. The book closes with an unusual self-interview and is regarded as a masterpiece of the photo essay.
