Six, the extraordinary magazine published by Comme des Garçons between 1988 and 1991, is one of the most distinctive editorial projects in the history of contemporary fashion. Conceived by Rei Kawakubo as an extension of her creative universe, the publication deliberately transcended the boundaries of a conventional fashion magazine to become a space for visual experimentation, where photography, art, architecture, design and cinema coexisted without apparent hierarchies.  The title Six referred to the sixth sense, the ability to perceive what lies beyond the five traditional senses. This idea perfectly encapsulated Kawakubo's philosophy, as her approach to fashion had always challenged established codes of beauty, representation and consumption. Rather than presenting Comme des Garçons collections through commercial photographs, the magazine offered a visual experience open to interpretation, in which images forged unexpected connections and suggested new ways of seeing.  Published twice a year to coincide with the Japanese label's new collections, Six comprised eight issues produced under the art direction of graphic designer Tsuguya Inoue and the editorial direction of Atsuko Kozasu. Its large format, close to A3, its radical layouts and the predominance of photography over text gave each issue an identity closer to an artist's book than a periodical. The first two issues were even presented as loose pages, reinforcing their experimental character and freedom of reading.  Its pages featured work by some of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, including Robert Frank, André Kertész, Josef Koudelka, Edward Weston, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, Kishin Shinoyama and Juergen Teller, alongside artistic and cultural references as diverse as Jean Cocteau, Eileen Gray and Gilbert & George. The selection was not intended to bring together prestigious names, but to construct a distinctive visual language in which images from different periods and disciplines acquired new meanings through juxtaposition.  One of the most fascinating aspects of Six is precisely the limited presence of Comme des Garçons clothing. Garments appear occasionally, integrated into a much broader narrative reflecting Kawakubo's cultural and aesthetic interests. The magazine thus rejected the usual promotional role of fashion publications to offer a statement of principles about creativity and artistic independence.  Originally distributed free of charge to clients and industry professionals, Six eventually became a cult publication. Its brief existence, distinctive design and exceptional quality of its collaborations have made its eight issues particularly prized today by collectors of photography, graphic design and fashion.  More than three decades after its disappearance, Six remains surprisingly relevant. Its way of connecting images, its rejection of editorial conventions and its ability to communicate an aesthetic identity without obvious explanations anticipated many of the visual strategies later adopted by independent publications. More than a fashion magazine, Six represents one of the most personal expressions of Rei Kawakubo's creative thinking and a key work in the history of contemporary editorial design.
