Published in 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of COMME des GARÇONS, this special issue of the Japanese magazine SWITCH offers an extensive exploration of the creative universe built by Rei Kawakubo. Its 416 pages combine fashion, photography, graphic design and archival material, also revisiting the main features that SWITCH had previously devoted to the label.
Highlights include an extensive interview with Rei Kawakubo, features on Dover Street Market in London, Ginza and New York, documentation of the exhibition devoted to COMME des GARÇONS at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a complete reproduction of the eight issues of the visual magazine Six, published between 1988 and 1991. It also revisits the COMME des GARÇONS Furniture catalogue of 1990 and a selection of graphic material and campaigns produced between 2008 and 2023.
More than a straightforward anniversary retrospective, the publication serves as a major visual archive of COMME des GARÇONS and the distinctive way in which the label has connected fashion, photography, art and design over five decades. Its carefully considered production and the wealth of historical material reproduced also give it the character of a collectible book.
