Valencia, 1964
Equipo Crónica emerged in Valencia in 1964 with the aim of renewing the Spanish art scene. Founded on the theoretical proposals of Tomás Llorens, the collective developed during the final years of Franco's dictatorship and the transition to democracy. Its original members were Juan Antonio Toledo, Manuel Valdés and Rafael Solbes.
One of Equipo Crónica's most striking features is its working method. As its name suggests, its works were created collectively. Solbes and Valdés first discussed their intentions and then painted together. They rejected the premises of Informalism and Abstract Expressionism. Equipo Crónica's work is critical in character, reporting on or chronicling social and political reality. They used familiar images to create paintings, photographs, posters and collages that reflected on pictorial language and genres.
Equipo Crónica also borrowed images from art history. Many subjects were inspired by Spanish Golden Age painting but placed within contemporary society. From 1970 onwards, the group evolved, experimenting with Pop Art techniques and devices such as flat colours, mass-media imagery and impersonal drawing, all as a critique of the system and individualism.
