Following Santa Barbara, Father is an intimate, compelling story of estrangement and reconnection, combining documentary photographs, family snapshots, texts and archival documents. Diana Markosian attempts to reconstruct the image of a familiar stranger: her father, whom she lost contact with at the age of seven. The book explores his absence, the artist's reconciliation with him almost twenty years later when they meet again in Armenia, and the shared emptiness of their long separation.
Through an intimate, richly documented family narrative, the book addresses universal questions of fatherhood, separation, absence, estrangement and reunion. As a tangible expression of this universality, the photographer has included an empty envelope in each book, inviting readers to share their own stories of loss and reconnection with family members or loved ones. These letters can then be sent to the artist to be collected and incorporated into a future exhibition devoted to her work.
