Terra Incognita
Terra Incognita emerges from the discovery of a land explored by someone seeking to observe and be observed simultaneously. A journey into the unknown and beyond everyday life, it encounters a space that questions us, at once complicit and distant. It maps a symbolic terrain where memory and the place's magic emerge. Through this interplay with nature, a personal, subjective gaze reveals strange, dreamlike, almost impossible images.
This visible yet intangible world enables exchange: reality and imagination seduce one another without exhausting what is seen, because we cannot retain everything that happens in a landscape. Terra Incognita gives visual form to experiences like revelations born of sensation, inviting us to keep looking at transient, changing, intangible landscapes. They are no less real for taking shape only fleetingly in our gaze.
The series was made during an artist residency at L'aparté, a contemporary art centre in Brittany, France. Born in Barcelona in 1974 and a Fine Arts graduate, Israel Ariño has work in numerous public and private collections, particularly in France, where he has found strong artistic and photographic affinities.
Le nom qui efface la couleur
This series revolves around possibility: being one thing or another, falling or flying, remaining or disappearing. More broadly, it addresses humanity's intrinsic freedom within a contingent world that continually demands choices.
Made in Le Blanc—the place where colour fades—the project examines traces of this often-forgotten territory, its granite foundation and its most fleeting appearances. Almost an abstraction or state of mind, it explores photography's limits from a threshold where a new kind of place emerges: vaguer and more ambiguous, yet more deeply engaged with a territory filled with feeling, metaphor and language.
The series was created during an artist residency at Nature Humaine in France's Centre region.
