Ihei Kimura’s Impression of Europe is a remarkable record of the photographer’s encounters with postwar Europe and an important example of his ability to transform travel photography into an intimate study of everyday life. Published by Asahi Shimbun Publishing in 1955, it brings together photographs made during Kimura’s first journey through Europe, undertaken between September and December 1954. (Abaa)

Rather than approaching Europe through monumental landmarks or conventional tourist imagery, Kimura concentrates on people, streets and fleeting encounters. His Leica allows him to work with remarkable spontaneity, capturing gestures, expressions and small details that reveal the character of the cities he visits. Paris occupies an important place within the book, but the photographs extend beyond the familiar image of the French capital to create a broader portrait of European life.

Kimura’s great strength is his ability to find poetry in ordinary situations. Children, workers, pedestrians, cafés and street scenes are photographed with an instinctive sense of timing, while his compositions remain deceptively simple. His photographs combine the directness of documentary photography with an extraordinary sensitivity to atmosphere and human presence.

The book is particularly significant within Kimura’s career because it represents the first of his two major European journeys, subsequently followed by a second volume devoted to his later travels. Together, these publications provide an important insight into how one of Japan’s leading photographers encountered Europe during the 1950s.

Impression of Europe is an essential Japanese photobook from the 1950s, combining Kimura’s spontaneous street photography with a highly personal vision of Europe at a moment of profound postwar transformation. Its photographs retain an immediacy and warmth that make the book as compelling today as when it was first published.
