This is the rare French edition from Lunwerg with the covers of the Spanish edition, including Spanish text on the back cover. August 21, 1968: a wristwatch held in front of a deserted avenue in Josef Koudelka's photograph seems to capture the calm before the storm. Soviet tanks entered Prague to crush the Prague Spring and Alexander Dubček's democratic reforms, which Moscow viewed as a turn towards the West. Koudelka, a former aeronautical engineer, captured the citizens' tension and resistance from the front lines. His photographs were smuggled across the Iron Curtain and reached Magnum Photos. He left Czechoslovakia seeking political asylum in 1970 and joined Magnum shortly afterwards.
“I would like young Russians to see their own faces in the faces of their parents or grandparents, and do their best never to become invaders again.” — Josef Koudelka
